MCCLAIN COUNTY, Okla. (KOKH) — Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating after human remains were found in a rural area of McClain County.

A worker made the gruesome discovery Thursday morning on a drilling site near I-35 and S.H. 59.

“Deputies were sent down here and myself and we found what we believe was human remains, skeletal remains,” said McClain County Sheriff Don Hewett.

The remains were in a wooded area just a hundreds yards from the oil drill. Sheriff Hewett believes the body had been there at least six months. Investigators couldn’t tell if it was a man or woman.

“However, we did find female clothing in the area, but we do not know if it was tied into this,” Hewett said.

The McClain County Sheriff’s Office reached out to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to help with the case. The OSBI technical team spent all day combing through the area, looking for any clues about the person’s identity.

Anthropologists from the University of Oklahoma and the Medical Examiner were also called to the scene.

“We will not know definitely until we do DNA and also probably dental records,” Hewett said. “That’s the main thing, we identify this individual and have closure for the family. That’s the main thing. And then find out what happened, and if it was a homicide, we’re going to find out who did it.”

Law enforcement plans to be back at the scene around 8 a.m. Friday morning to continue investigating
